Life, at the moment

Yesterday while driving home, my wife was enthusiastically listing all the food that she wanted to try at this food court, and I couldn’t help but be amazed at the life the Lord has given me.

The bills are paid. Barring war or some catastrophe, there will be food on the table and a roof over our heads.

I have a wife who has seen my worst and my best, and has chosen to stay with me. Even more important, we still laugh — at, with, and beside each other.

I have a son who genuinely likes hanging out with me. Except when he’s on his bed and he wants his ‘me time’. Then, he’ll give me a kiss, and then gently push me and point to the door.

My parents are both alive and we talk on the phone. We’re even planning on going out of town for my upcoming birthday. My sister and I help each other. We are all still in each other’s lives.

My latest laboratory results are all green. My son and I continue to work on being healthier.

I have a few, but good friends. Sometimes, I am even placed in a position to help others. And I have elders more rooted in the Faith that I can come to for accountability and wisdom. And my heart, even if it renders me furious at times, is blessed that it still identifies with the needy, the oppressed, the overlooked.

For the first time in 15 years, I will be speaking again at the pulpit. Last Friday, I even led a Bible study about divorce. And by being open and faithful, we arrived at a place where we find that our response to the subject should be nothing less than the Grace extended to us by the Lord.

Do you see how rare this is? How privileged?

It’s not that everything is perfect — I have a calcaneal spur that makes extended walking difficult, for example. And of course, every single peso we have can be allocated to the ‘Mito life fund’. But there is peace in my house and my heart.

Hindsight is useful, and foresight can be advantageous. But sight? The ability to see exactly who, where you are, and what you have right now? That’s invaluable.

The Lord is good. His love endures forever.
