The Shape of Words: Yesterday

Writing Upward
1 min readJul 17, 2019

When I first heard ‘Yesterday’ by The Beatles, my tatay told me that the original song was about breakfast. McCartney had the melody, he said, but the lyrics weren’t there yet. He was singing, of all things, about eggs.

Scrambled eggs…

all I want for breakfast

is scrambled eggs…

The group knew the melody was strong, but Lennon argued that the words didn’t live up to the music. They knew it had to change. So they did. And one of the best songs ever written was born — out of eggs, if the stories were to be believed.

I know it’s easy enough to google if my dad’s story is true, but I’d rather not. Some things are true regardless of whether or not they actually happened.
